Expertise

Claudia Chien studied biochemistry with a biotechnology specialization at the University of Waterloo, Canada and received an Honours Bachelor of Science. After working for one year, she got a full scholarship through Cancer Research UK to pursue a degree in Radiation Biology at the University of Oxford, where she completed and received a research-based Masters of Science. She then received full funding by the Ontario government to complete a Bachelor of Education with the specialization of senior level chemistry and biology at York University, Canada. After teaching upper level maths and sciences in the private and public sector in Toronto, Canada, and working as a laboratory technician, she decided to continue her research in medical imaging. Claudia completed a PhD in the medical neurosciences at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin in the group of Prof. Friedemann Paul about “Spinal cord atrophy measured from cerebral T1-weighted MRI: applications in clinical investigations of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders” (2019). Her expertise lies in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal cord in patients with neuroinflammatory disorders, and she will be extending her research focus to include the use of convolutional neural networks (i.e. deep learning) to evaluate MRI disease activity in multiple sclerosis (please see project webpage deepMS).
